NRC Digest: May Classics Season

It might have rained most of the past two weeks, but there's brighter days (and races) ahead.

It’s starting to warm up, so the longer races are winding down. Don’t worry, though, there will be plenty of NoMa events through the summer, as well as a few shorter races in the coming months.

Upcoming Events

May

👟 Down the Stretch Track Fest - Saturday, May 24 @ 5:15pm at George Mason University
Lighthorse Track Club is putting on a track meet at GMU on the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend. Events include the mile, 5000, and a 4×800m relay. Use the code NOMA15 for 15% off entry.

🌜 Washington D.C. Twilight 5000 - Saturday, May 31 @ 6 pm at Catholic University Track
DC’s most rained-on event (don’t fact check me on that, vibes only) will return at the end of May. 12.5 laps around a track, how far can it be, really? If you aren’t running, still come out and cheer - you can actually see the runners the whole time they’re racing! Heads up, this usually sells out, so sign up early!

June

🐴 Run Unbridled Track Fest - Saturday, June 14 @ 4:40pm at George Mason University
Out of town Memorial Day weekend? Want a backup track race if Twilight is cancelled? Lighthorse Track Club is putting on a second track meet in June: Sign up here, use the code NOMA15 for 15% off entry. . Events include the 5000, Steeplechase, and a Distance Medley Relay. Pop over to the Discord if you’re interested in the relay, we’re trying to fill a couple teams and possibly carpool to the race.

NoMa MoMA: Monthly Member Awareness

Scott Belile

You’ve may have seen him whizzing by on the MBT at our Thursday runs. This month, take a moment to slow down and get to know Scott Belile!

Why did you join NoMa Run Club?
I moved to D.C. in May 2023 and by August longed for human connection outside work. I found NRC on Instagram and learned they were meeting that night, so there I was doing Wednesday hills on T Street.

Favorite place to run in DC?
I love mindlessly run-exploring wherever the green lights take me, which lately have been neighborhoods around Northwest, Northeast, and Maryland.

What are your next running goals?
Ultimately aspire to beat my high school PR of 17:03, but in the short term I’d be happy to drop 13 seconds to go sub-18:00 at a Thursday night NRC. I’d also like to knock four minutes off my next half marathon to finish below 1:20:00.

What do you like to do when you’re not running?
Travel the globe, crosswords, read, watch dumb comedy shows, and keep plants alive.

Events Recap

Earth Day Plogging and Arboretum Azaleas - April 19 and 26
We put on a couple special Saturday runs in April. Stay tuned for future special runs.

Ahead of Earth Day, we slowed down a bit to clean up the areas we run through each week. The 7 mile group picked up several bags of trash from the Anacostia River Trail, while the 5k group cleaned up along the route around Capitol Hill.

The following week, we switched up the route and headed up to the National Arboretum to see peak azalea bloom.

Have an idea for a future fun Saturday run? Swing by the Discord or reach out to any member of the leadership team!

Congratulations to Ally F., Ashley P., and James M. for braving the wet conditions and crushing the National Women’s Half Marathon.

Capitol Hill Classic - May 18
A huge group ventured just South of Mass Ave for the Capitol Hill Classic 10k. The club placed first out of 34 teams in DC’s largest 10k! Congrats to Paul R., Sean O., and Kieran O. for being our extra speedy scoring runners.

Andrew, Ben, Luke, Dylan, and Tucker all PR’d on the rolling out and back course. Congratulations to all of our runners! You can see more photos in this Google Photos album.

New Rabbit Singlets!

We have a new and improved Rabbit singlet design with an easier to read front logo and a brighter pink on the gradient. It’s rumored that the new singlets are also even faster than the original order.

They are $60 each. We need a minimum 4 orders of a size before we can submit an order so please order before June 9th to ensure we will have enough.

There are also a few of the originals remaining. We have three (3) Men’s XS (fits like a women’s S or M!) and one (1) Women’s XS.

Merch store

Now that warmer weather is here, this is a reminder that we have an on-demand merch store! It's packed with everything you need for races and weekly training from shirts, racing singlets, hats, and more. Not only will you look great, but 10% of all proceeds go back to supporting the club. It's a win-win: get the gear you need and help us keep putting on events!
